‘Makatak’ Chat With Patty & Jayce Ahead Of Their 50th Birthday!

Many A Kangaroo And Tribesman Assist Kids.

Thats the meaning behind the name ‘Makatak’, a small group who raise funds through various fundraisers for Legacy and the Diggers Rest Home in Corrimal, as well as putting on a party for the children at Peterborough Special School every Christmas.

Their presence has been greatly appreciated within the Illawarra, so much that they’re about to hit a huge milestone – turning 50 years old!

Ian from Makatak joined Patty & Jayce this morning to chat about the importance of Makatak in the Illawarra.

“We have 15 tribesmen in our tribe…I’ve been in it for 21 years this year” he said.

“We predominantly raise funds for the Peterborough Special School, it’s a school in Warilla that deals with handicapped children, with a chicken wheel every Tuesday night [at the Albion Park RSL] and a corroboree once a month…and put on a Christmas day for them that they would normally not have with their families”.

People such as Ian are very selfless with their generosity, and when asked what he got out of donating his time to the charity, he said there were a few special memories and feelings that stood out.

“We’ve done a couple of real special ones…one with a family – the mother passed away suddenly of breast cancer, and the father was left with three children under the age of five…we helped them out with food vouchers and hampers, clothed the eldest one who was about to start school” he said.

“Seeing the look of joy on the young kids’ faces…on some of the Christmas days, it’s brought a tear to my eye you know, and really choked me up”

If you’d like to get involved, you can head to the Albion Park RSL every Tuesday night for their ‘chicken wheel’ fundraiser. Or, you can simply contact the club on (02) 4256 1200.
