Taking your new puppy for a walk? Here’s what you need to consider!
Bringing home a new puppy is one of life’s greatest joys, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges, including walking and socialising. Thankfully, with the right guidance, you can confidently take on puppy parenthood.
Ana from K9Empire in Wollongong has shared some helpful tips and common pitfalls when it comes to caring for your furry friend in the big wide world.
Socialising without overwhelming
Puppies need to explore the world to grow into confident, friendly dogs but it’s a delicate balance. Throwing them into a crowded dog park on day one might backfire and scare them off social situations altogether.
Ana recommends starting small, “don’t overstimulate them, take them to a friend’s house first.” Once they’re comfortable around one or two calm dogs, you can gradually introduce them to off-leash parks and busier environments.
Ana stresses the importance of getting puppies into new environments with other dogs. Interestingly, she says “when they experience new scents, they become more tired than in a normal walk.”
A tired dog is a happy dog!
Lead Control
When walking your new pup, you need to remember that you are in control, “the lead is not given, it is earned”.
Ana suggests walking your pooch on a collar as opposed to harnesses. Harnesses encourage pulling, whereas collars will help keep you in control. Her advice is to keep your lead short when you take your dog for its first few walks so your they know who’s boss.
However, Ana noted that if you are transporting your dog in the car, you should strap them in with a harness. If you stop suddenly, it’s safer and more comfortable for them.
Life has gotten in the way!
Sometimes life gets in the way, and you aren’t spending enough time with your poor little puppy. If your little guy isn’t getting the attention they deserve then perhaps you should consider a dog walker or a pet sitter. You can go to a professional like Ana or even just close friends who are able to give your dog the exercise, playtime, and social interaction they need while you’re tied up.
