At around lunchtime this Saturday, a group of locals will gather outside Thirroul Library to show their support for Miss Roxee, a local drag queen entertaining a group of local kids with stories, songs and games.

Organised by the Illawarra Friends of Drag Storytime group, the event is an act of support to show that this is the kind of activity members of the group want to see in their community.

“There’s been a lot of negativity lately in the media and online, and we want families to feel really supported as they come in with their kids to attend the story time,” Renata, a local parent and member of the group joining the crowd, told Campbell and Tristan on Evenings.

Rainbow Storytime sessions happen in libraries all across the country, presenting kids with an opportunity to encounter some of the diversity in their communities. This Rainbow Storytime coincides with Pride Month.

“Drag Queens are amazing, flamboyant, often wear lots of colours, and are big personalities and kids just love it,” Renata said.

It is Renata’s hope that there will be dozens of people with lots of colourful flags out the front to welcome the families as they arrive.
